Young Artist of the Year

Teachers of talented middle school and high school students may submit nominations for Young Artist of the Week recognition. The Kalamazoo Gazette features several students each week. Schools are assigned a specific week during the year. In the spring, graduating seniors who have been featured as Young Artist of the Week during their high school years are invited to apply for the Young Artist of the Year Award, presented at the annual Community Arts Awards Gala.

Young Artist of the Week Nomination Guidelines

PURPOSE:
The purpose of the Young Artist program is to identify and recognize Kalamazoo County young people who are active in dance, theatre, media arts, music, and visual and literary arts. These students will be recognized in the Kalamazoo Gazette Family Section as Young Artists of the Week. This program is a collaboration of the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo, Kalamazooo Gazette, Target, and KRESA’s Education for the Arts.

WHO MAY BE RECOGNIZED?
Middle school and high school students showing exemplary artistic talent will be recognized in the Kalamazoo Gazette each week. The coverage will include a school photo of the student and information about their special talent, provided by the mentor, teacher or artistic coach nominating the student.

HOW DO I NOMINATE A STUDENT?
Schools are assigned scheduled nomination/publication deadlines. The school schedule and application form are available online or from the Arts Council. Use one or two paragraphs to describe the student’s special talent. Include a school photo. If a photo is not available, students may come to the Arts Council to have a digital photo taken. Please call (269) 342-5059 to make arrangements. E-mail applications are acceptable. Mail, e-mail or bring your application form and photo to the Arts Council by the deadline indicated on the schedule. Schools not meeting the deadline may be reassigned or dropped from the list at the Arts Council’s discretion.

GUIDELINES FOR YOUNG ARTIST AWARD
Previous Young Artist Award Winners

Students in Kalamazoo County are eligible to submit an application for the Young Artist of the Year award if they:

• Will graduate from high school in 2008, and
• Have been recognized as a Young Artist in the Kalamazoo Gazette as a high school student, or
• Have participated in the 2008 Michigan Youth Arts Festival

Applications for the Young Artist of the Year award will be accepted beginning May 1. A panel of experts drawn from the arts and education communities will determine the award winner by late June. For more information, e-mail info@kalamazooarts.com.
