How to Assemble Your Portfolio
A professional portfolio is important in all stages of an artist's career and in all fields of
the arts. Typically, a portfolio will contain these items:
- Biography/Resume – Keep this document up to date. Make sure everything is spelled correctly,
and use good grammar. You may even want to consider hiring a professional proofreader.
- Samples of your work – For performing artists, samples will include audiotape, CD, DVD, VHS
tape or other appropriate new media. Visual artists should include good-quality slides or
photographic prints of your work. Digital images on CD are helpful, too. While digital images
may not completely replace slides or photographs anytime soon, they are becoming increasingly
important.
- Headshots – These are essential for performers. Hire a professional photographer to take your
portrait.
- Publicity – Include copies of any news articles about you, such as reviews and feature stories
that have been published in newspapers or magazines.
If you're submitting your portfolio to someone who is considering hiring you or purchasing your
work, remember that portfolios are easily lost or misplaced. It's unfortunate, but it
happens. That's why you should never use your last original of anything – brochure, clipping,
photograph, CD, etc. – in a portfolio. Invest in copies that you can afford to lose.

FY2011 - Kalamazoo Artist Development Initiative, Round 1 Workshop
September 15
Grant workshop is being held in conjunction with OnePlace at the Kalamazoo Public Library.
September 15, 2010 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM
First time applicants and those that have not received funding in the past are recommended to attend the entire workshop. Those wishing to gain information specifically for the Arts Fund may arrive at 3:30 PM.
Applicants must be a member of the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo to apply. |
